Thank you...

Thank you to everyone who helped me last night. It was a rough night, and thank you for caring. I know I don't always do a good job of expressing how much that means to me when you try to help, but thank you.

Top 100 Movie Romances (?)

http://www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/11/afi.romance.ap/index.html

Interestingly, a really large number have unhappy endings. I think there's really something to the resonance of the lost love idea... I mean, Shakespeare wrote lots of happy endings, but no one mentions those couples. It's always Romeo and Juliet instead. (Though a lot of the happy couples [i.e., Beatrice and Benedick] seemed more believable to me than Romeo and Juliet, but I digress...)

Still, I'm happy to see some favorites of mine on here... Casablanca, The Princess Bride, Beauty and the Beast, Titanic (yes, I liked Titanic, and I'm not afraid to admit it ;) ).

Movie rant

(apologies to those of you who have heard me say this already)

You've Got Mail is the only movie I've seen in a theater that I've almost walked out of. My mom wanted to see it. Gaaawsh did it suck. And as if you needed another reason besides the insipid dialogue, holey plot, celebration of Internet infidelity, and so on...

In the movie we have two female characters. Parker Posey's character is successful and independent. She's also a mega-bitch who ends up alone and unhappy. On the other hand, Meg Ryan's character is cutesy and incompetent. Her idea of getting tough is dancing around throwing shadow punches -- while at work. Oooooh yeah, that screams "take me seriously." But it's okay that she's a twit, because at the end Tom Hanks -- the same guy who destroyed the business that was her passion -- sweeps in to take care of her, having abandoned the grownup woman for this irritating woman-child.

Makes me want to scream...

Can anyone name some more feminist movies? Especially ones that show you can be a happy feminist.

Harry Potter!

I admit I'm late to the phenomenon, I haven't even read all the books yet (so don't tell me any spoilers!), but I think Harry Potter is friggin' awesome. I'm really excited about the next movie, and I plan to sit down and read all the books straight through as soon as possible.

One of my co-workers and I had a very involved Harry Potter discussion yesterday. It included the exchange:

Me: I worry about Harry when he's with the Dursleys in the summer.
Amy: I think everyone does.

So to see what everyone else thinks:
